Mission
AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
Program Overview
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an elective class focusing on post-secondary success. AVID teaches skills like time management, note-taking, study skills, and critical reading and writing skills. AVID students are bright students who have the desire to go to college and a willingness to work hard. AVID students are capable of completing rigorous coursework, but may be falling short of their full potential and need extra support to thrive in accelerated classes.
Curriculum
With the appropriate postsecondary preparation and a focus on soft skills that businesses need, AVID students are ready to shape their path and change our world. AVID elective students develop and experience:
- WICOR skills (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading)
- Focused note-taking
- Tutorials
- Text annotation and critical reading
- Time management
- Building soft skills
- Building public speaking skills
- Guest speakers
- Resume and cover letter writing
- Interview skills
- Socratic seminars
- Scholarship and college application support
Tutorials
Small group tutorial sessions take place 1-2 times per week during the AVID elective class. During tutorials, the AVID elective class is divided into several tutorial groups based on subject area. Under the direction and supervision of the AVID elective teacher, an AVID trained tutor facilitates the discussion and helps students work through points of confusion from their core content classes. AVID tutorials create deeper understanding of concepts covered in core content classes and develop skills necessary to become self-directed learners. It's not just homework help.
Qualifications
AVID students are those who are in the academic middle, have the drive to work hard, and/or may need extra support in achieving their post-secondary goals. Students who are eligible for the Dwyer AVID program should meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Earned As, Bs and/or Cs in middle school or previous high school if transferring
- Has a desire to go to college or continue on with post-secondary studies
- May be first in family to go to college
- May be historically underserved in four-year colleges
- Ability to maintain enrollment in accelerated courses (ex: Honors, Dual Enrollment, AICE, and/or AP Classes)
- Hard working and/or eager to learn and grow
